Australia has a proud history in tennis – 28 Davis cup wins, well over 150 Grand Slam Championships across all formats and a plethora of world number 1’s. This rich vein of success is being continued on by strong performances from Australia’s current crop of professional tennis players. But for the general public, there is a growing public health epidemic in the form of obesity.
Let’s face the facts, the modern Australian is growing increasingly time-poor. Longer work hours and a growing trend of inactivity among both adults and children is alarming. This has led to 1 in 12 children being obese (8%), and 1 in 4 adults being obese (28%).
Australia currently has an estimated population of just over 25 million people and in order to reverse this trend, steps must be taken to keep Australian’s active.
There needs to be an emphasis on every Australian adult getting AT LEAST 30 minutes of activity each day. The Department of Health says adults aged 18-64 should accumulate 2.5 to 5 hours of moderate intensity physical activity or 1.25 to 2.5 hours of vigorous activity each week. Children should accumulate at least 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous intensity physical activity every day.
But that is easier said than done – how on earth will the modern Australian parent fit in trips to and from various sports and/or activities for their kids, plus trying to fit in exercise for themselves? The answer is simple – Vamos.
